Project Timeline
September 2014
UNITY students participate in activities and discussions to uncover the core belief of UNITY. Student do a lot of reflecting on their own behaviors and how this aligns with the class' objectives. We set norms for behavior in class and expectations for out of class.
October 2014
Students are trained on how to facilitate small group discussions. This includes the duty of teachers being a mandated reporters and the students' role in that, how to set and enforce group norms, communication styles, and how to deal with students' different personality traits. Students need a lot of examples of how to react when students say/do things unexpectedly. The best training will occur during our first forum when leadership students are forced to put theory into action.
November 2014
Make contact with middle schools that feed into our high school. Find out how we can support their needs and students.
December 2014
Make plans to help other schools by either helping them raise goods that their students need or by participating in an event at their school. We are willing to host students at our school to facilitate activities and discussions or travel to their schools.
January - April 2015
Create a plan for a middle school forums. Work with UNITY students to create activities tailored for 7th and 8th grade students at our feeder schools. Find out the relevant topics for each school and age range and incorporate this into activities that will help students reflect on their own situation and be empowered to make a better life for themselves. This may include topics such as prejudice, discrimination, bullying, celebrating diversity, and facing fears of being in high school.
Fill out field trip request form and substitute request paperwork and get it approved by the principal and district office. Confirm funding for transportation if needed. Some schools we will be able to walk to if we are traveling to their site.
April 2015
Have all efforts to help middle schools be completed by the end of April. In this process, have students and/or staff participating in our efforts fill out surveys on how effective our contribution was. Have UNITY students reflect on their experiences of mentoring younger students. Make sure UNITY students make efforts keep make contact with students they have had in their groups. This could be by sending a memento or a note to each student personally signed.
May 2015
Aggregate qualitative data to show that our efforts in working with middle school students made a difference. Learn what we can do in the future to further our impact.
